Supreme Court Refuses Urgent Hearing on CJP Plea; Says ‘No Time to Watch Videos’
New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to grant an urgent hearing on a petition related to the alleged police action against students during the CJP protest in Delhi, dealing a setback to the petitioners.
The plea sought immediate judicial intervention over allegations of police excesses, including lathi-charge and the use of tear gas during the protest. During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel attempted to show video footage of the incident before the Bench.
However, the Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohan, refused to examine the videos at that stage. The Chief Justice remarked that the court had “no interest in watching videos” and did not have time to do so, while declining the request for an urgent listing.
The counsel argued that the matter involved the future of lakhs of students and required immediate attention. Despite the submissions, the Supreme Court refused to entertain the plea on an urgent basis.
The development comes after the Delhi High Court also declined to intervene in the matter earlier, observing that the court should not be drawn into such issues. The Supreme Court’s decision is being seen as a significant setback for the petitioners seeking immediate judicial relief over the protest-related police action.
