New Delhi : Security arrangements outside the residence of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi have been stepped up. The Delhi Police took this measure after receiving intelligence regarding a fresh threat. According to officials, while Gyanesh Kumar already enjoys Z-plus security, additional police personnel have been deployed outside his home in light of the new intelligence input and ongoing protests in the capital.
A senior police officer stated that the local district police have also been instructed to augment security forces at their level. Given the ongoing protests in the New Delhi district, all security agencies have been directed to coordinate effectively to prevent any untoward incident.
This enhancement of security for Gyanesh Kumar comes at a time when leaders of the INDIA bloc, led by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, are protesting against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls conducted by the Election Commission. The opposition has demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Z-plus is the second-highest category of security in the country. The highest level is the Special Protection Group (SPG) cover provided to the Prime Minister and immediate family members.
Z-plus security involves the deployment of approximately 50 security personnel across various shifts. It includes additional security arrangements for the protectee’s residence and convoy.
Amidst the protests, a large contingent of central forces is also being deployed to maintain law and order in the capital. The Ministry of Home Affairs has made 221 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)—comprising approximately 23,000 personnel—available to the Delhi Police for the period between October 8 and October 12.
The CRPF companies included in this deployment are being brought in from Jammu & Kashmir, West Bengal, and Chhattisgarh. These additional forces will assist the Delhi Police in managing protests, securing key government buildings, and maintaining law and order in Central Delhi.
