New Delhi : Scientists have issued a strong warning after new research revealed a sharp decline in Antarctic sea ice, raising serious concerns about accelerating climate change.According to a study by the European Geosciences Union (EGU), Antarctic sea ice reached one of its lowest recorded levels in 2025, with an extreme temperature rise of nearly 25°C above average in the region during the period.
Around 2 million square kilometers of sea ice were lost, a change scientists describe as a major threat to Earth’s climate balance.Sea ice plays a crucial role in regulating global temperatures by reflecting sunlight back into space.
Its rapid decline means more heat is being absorbed by the oceans, which already store over 90% of the Earth’s excess heat. This is contributing to rising sea levels, stronger storms, and increased risks for coastal regions worldwide.
Researchers also found that melting sea ice is affecting cloud formation, further complicating weather patterns and climate predictions.
Experts warn that if current warming trends continue, sea levels could rise significantly by 2100, posing serious risks to low-lying coastal areas across the globe.The findings highlight Antarctica’s critical role in Earth’s climate system and serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global climate action.
