Amritsar,Punjab : In a major crackdown on crossborder drug and illegal arms trafficking the Commissionerate Police Amritsar has dismantled three major supply networks, arrested eight accused and recovered 9.549 kg of heroin, 5.459 kg of opium and an illegal .30-bore pistol.
According to police preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested accused were allegedly operating in coordination with foreign based smugglers and receiving consignments of narcotics and illegal weapons through drones for further distribution.
Police said the investigation has also established links between the arrested accused and other individuals allegedly involved in the wider supply chain.
Efforts are underway to identify the remaining members of the networks and trace the complete backward and forward linkages.
Separate FIRs have been registered at Police Station Cantonment, Police Station A Division and Police Station Chheharta in Amritsar in connection with the recoveries and arrests.
Further investigation is in progress to uncover the wider network, identify additional suspects and determine the source and intended destinations of the drugs and illegal weapon consignments.
The operation comes amid intensified efforts by Punjab Police to check cross border smuggling and disrupt organised networks involved in narcotics and illegal arms trafficking.
Police said strict action would continue against those involved in drug trafficking, arms supply and other organised criminal activities.
